President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his resolve to implement tough reforms to rejuvenate Ghana’s struggling economy and governance.

Speaking after being declared the winner of the December 9 elections, Mahama emphasized the importance of bold decisions during his upcoming four-year term.

“We will initiate significant governance reforms and sometimes enforce severe measures to reset our nation and restore it as the Black Star of Africa,” he stated.

The Electoral Commission (EC) announced Mahama’s victory with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of valid votes cast, defeating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who secured 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

The victory also solidified the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s parliamentary dominance, with over 160 seats confirmed, including constituencies long held by the ruling NPP. This achievement bolsters Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to lead the nation once again.

An early inauguration of the transition team is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11.

Expressing gratitude, Mahama said, “I give thanks to God for preparing a table before me in the presence of my enemies and for anointing my head with oil.” However, he acknowledged the challenging road ahead due to the current state of the nation, adding, “The outgoing government has plunged our nation into an abyss.”

He called for unity and restraint among NDC supporters, urging them not to vent their frustrations by destroying state properties. “We want a Ghana that works for all people,” he concluded.
