The Majority in Parliament is urging Speaker Alban Bagbin to immediately declare the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant following a Tamale High Court ruling that annulled the constituency’s 2024 election results.
According to the caucus, incumbent MP Matthew Nyindam should cease participating in parliamentary business until a rerun of the election is conducted. The Majority argues that both Parliament and the MP have already been served with the court’s decision, which ordered a fresh poll after a successful legal challenge.
Addressing the House, Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor cited precedent, referencing the removal of former Assin North MP Gyakye Quayson under similar circumstances.
“Mr Speaker, when the Honourable Gyakye Quayson was ordered to go through a rerun, this House insisted he could not continue to participate in proceedings. Eventually, he had to leave,” he said. “Precedent has been laid. Nobody can say today that Honourable Nyindam must have a voice in this House.”
The Minority, however, has vowed to resist any attempt to bar Nyindam from representing his constituents. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin told journalists on Wednesday that his side would challenge any move to remove the MP before all legal processes are fully exhausted.
