At least 34 people have died and nearly 200 others injured after heavy rains caused severe flooding across Malawi, officials reported.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) said the floods have affected 23 administrative areas, impacting more than 69,000 households—approximately 310,000 people. Over 6,000 households have been displaced and are currently staying in 84 emergency shelters.

Southern Malawi’s Chikwawa district has been the hardest hit, with nearly 25,000 households affected. More than 1,800 people have sought refuge in 24 shelters in the district, where nine deaths have so far been confirmed.

Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as assessment teams reach remote areas cut off by damaged infrastructure.

The government, working alongside humanitarian partners, has launched relief operations and allocated $10 million (17 billion Malawian kwacha) to support emergency response, restore basic services, and begin early recovery efforts.
