Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II has given the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership in the Mampong Constituency an ultimatum to retract anti-Ashanti comments made by some party youth. The comments were made in opposition to the possible nomination of an Ashanti, Esther Dwomoh, as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). The NDC youth had protested the rumored nomination on April 9 and 10, vandalizing party property and setting items ablaze.
The Mamponghene condemned the actions, stating that Ashanti is a region known for its tolerance and welcoming nature, where other tribes are allowed to install their own chiefs. He questioned why some individuals were trying to cause division among the people of Mampong. Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, a former registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, served as the regent of the Kingdom of Ashanti from February 25, 1999, to April 26, 1999.
The NDC leadership has apologized for the violence, condemned the actions of the youth, and urged calm while awaiting President John Dramani Mahama’s final decision on the MCE nomination. The Mamponghene has given the NDC leadership until tomorrow afternoon to retract the anti-Ashanti comments, warning that failure to comply would lead to consequences.
