The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 22-year-old boy, Godgift Acquah, alias Kwame Atta, to 25 years into prison for defiling a 14-year-old girl
According to reports received from Adwoa Durowaa, a Tarkwa-based journalist, the incident occurred in Prestea, where the victim resides. A medical examination conducted at the Prestea Government Hospital confirmed that the victim had been raped and, as a result, contracted HIV.
The court, presided over by Judge Hathia Ama Manu, delivered the verdict on March 5, 2025, after finding the accused guilty of the heinous crime. The sentence reflects the severity of the offense and the need to protect vulnerable members of society, particularly children.
The case highlights the alarming issue of child abuse and defilement in Ghana, which requires concerted efforts from law enforcement agencies, social services, and communities to prevent and address. The 25-year prison sentence serves as a deterrent to potential offenders and underscores the importance of safeguarding children’s rights and well-being.
As Ghana continues to grapple with the challenges of child protection, this case emphasizes the need for increased awareness, education, and community engagement to prevent child abuse and ensure that perpetrators face justice.
