An Accra court has discharged Samuel Agbenyo Borketey, a 27-year-old trader, who was accused of unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.
The case, which stemmed from an arrest on September 26, 2022, at Nima Junction, was dismissed after key evidence was not tendered in court.
According to the prosecution, police officers performing visibility duties at the Nima Junction traffic light stopped a motorcycle (Okada) around 10:00 AM. The motorcycle, red and black in color, was being ridden by a witness while Borketey, who was carrying a black bag, was a passenger.
Upon being asked to open his bag, Borketey removed a blue polythene bag from it and suddenly took to his heels, abandoning the bag at the scene.
The police officers chased and managed to apprehend him. Upon inspection, the abandoned polythene bag was found to contain 108 pieces of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The substances, later tested and confirmed as cannabis with a net weight of 84.09 grams, were forwarded as evidence.
Based on this, Borketey was charged with unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.
However, during court proceedings, the case was dismissed, and Borketey was discharged after the prosecution failed to tender key evidence.
