Accra Circuit Court presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah has remanded Eric Afful, a driver, into custody for allegedly stealing a Toyota Hilux pick-up belonging to the Ghana Police Service. His alleged accomplice, identified as Acquah, is currently at large.
Afful has been charged with two counts: conspiracy to commit crime, to wit stealing, contrary to Section 23 and 124 (1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and stealing, contrary to Section 124 (1) of the same Act.
Prosecutor Chief Inspector Amanie Abel told the court that the complainant is the Commander of the National Patrol Unit at the National Police Headquarters in Accra.
On 19 August 2025, the complainant returned from work around 7:00 pm and parked his official Toyota Hilux pick-up with registration number WR 1805-Z, valued at GH¢300,000, in front of his official residence at Ashaley Botwe.
On 20 August 2025, at about 7:00 am, the complainant discovered the vehicle is missing and lodged a complaint at the Lakeside Estates Police Station.
Later the same day, at about 2:00 am, a police patrol team intercepted the vehicle being driven by Afful. He was arrested and taken to the Auto Theft Unit, while the vehicle was impounded.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a police driving logbook and the complainant’s hospital ID card.
Further checks on the accused revealed a bunch of Toyota ignition keys, three of which could start the vehicle.
According to the prosecution, Afful initially claimed that a friend who owned the vehicle had asked him to pick up a lady. When ordered to contact the said friend, he failed and later admitted that he and Acquah had stolen the vehicle from the complainant’s residence.
Acquah was reported to have taken a taxi towards Kasoa to meet a potential buyer from the Western Region.
During proceedings today, Afful declined for his plea to be taken, informing the court that his lawyer would be present on the next adjourned date.
The court remanded him into custody until Thursday September 4,2025 while investigations continue.
