The Accra High Court has sentenced Daniel Obirikwa Adjin to life imprisonment for the fatal stabbing of his elder brother, William Adjin, in 2017 at Mamprobi, Accra.
The sentence followed a 5-2 majority verdict by a jury that found Daniel guilty of murder after a lengthy trial.
Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, delivering the judgment, stated, “The jury, after a majority decision of 5-2, finds the accused guilty of murder. Accordingly, the court sentences him to life imprisonment.” The convict has one month to appeal the sentence.
Convict’s Defense
Daniel claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that his brother attacked him and grabbed his testicles during a dispute. He also cited intoxication and confusion over missing money as factors that influenced his actions.
The jury, however, rejected his claims.
The Incident
The tragic event occurred on March 19, 2017. According to the prosecution, William Adjin was resting on the porch of their home when Daniel launched the attack, stabbing him near the collarbone.
Despite efforts by neighbors to disarm him, Daniel resisted and broke the knife during the struggle. William was rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital but died an hour later from excessive bleeding caused by multiple stab wounds.
Arrest and Trial
Daniel fled the scene but was later arrested in James Town after reportedly attempting to harm other family members.
A postmortem report cited “Exsanguination and Multiple stab injuries” as the cause of death.
The case, which has left the Mamprobi community shocked and grieving, underscores the tragic consequences of family disputes escalating into violence.
