Residents of Tongor-Dzemeni have described as ridiculous some street names allotted by the South-Dayi District Assembly.
According to some of the residents, the street names are unfamiliar, foreign and does not represent who they are.
Although some of the residents seem unbothered about what name is allotted on their walls, others have threatened to remove it should the district fail to rename them.
Some of the street names causing the confusion include Manchester, Liverpool, Connecticut, Dakota and Bavaria.
One of the residents said “these names are unfamiliar, we are in Ghana, Volta-region to be precise, where from these foreign names. We have asked for explanations to these names or change of name from the district, if they fail, we remove them”.
Similarly, another resident said “I think there was no consultation on the part of the District Assembly. They should know there are important people here who deserve to be named after each street not these foreign names”.
However, some football fans are happy that their favorite football teams have been recognized in their area.
“I see it as recognition. Chelsea fans should stop the noise, over here we only know Liverpool and Manchester as you can see”.
Meanwhile some of the names that have some family names in the area have also spark some level of controversy as some families think they have not been recognized by the Assembly.
The Republic Press can confirm that some of the street names have been renamed after protest of wrong spelling.
