The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has confirmed the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi—popularly known as Adenta Kumi—during what he described as a distressing and heavily armed dawn operation allegedly conducted by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
In a Facebook post early Friday morning, the MP stated that Kumi was taken from his home roughly three hours earlier by a group of eight men, six of whom were masked and reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles.
The remaining two, he added, were dressed in plain clothes and provided no official explanation for the arrest.
“These Rambo-style operations by state agents raise serious questions about respect for civil liberties and the state of democratic governance in our country,” Assafuah wrote. He ended his post with the hashtag #FreeAdentaKumiNow, signaling his opposition to the manner in which the arrest was conducted.
Family members corroborated the MP’s account, confirming that Kumi was taken into custody around dawn by armed individuals believed to be NIB operatives.
As of press time, no official statement had been issued by the National Intelligence Bureau or the Ministry of National Security to clarify the basis for the operation or the charges, if any, against Kumi.
Alfred Ababio Kumi is a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Adenta constituency.
He has recently been in the spotlight following his petition to former President John Mahama, urging him to disband the committee currently investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.
In his petition, Kumi raised allegations of possible misconduct involving members of the judicial panel. He claimed that on May 15, shortly after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Gertrude Torkornoo Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi, were seen dining at the upscale Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area with Thaddeus Sory—counsel for businessman Daniel Ofori, the original petitioner in the case.
According to Kumi, the group was overheard discussing matters allegedly linked to the petition, a development he believes compromises the impartiality of the proceedings.
