Two men, Alex Frimpong, 24, and Abdul Razak Mohammed, 49, have been charged with unlawful possession of human body parts in the Dansoman Circuit Court.
The charges, filed under Section 698(b) of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), were brought against the accused after an alleged attempt to use human remains in a ritual.
According to court details, Frimpong, a mason from Pokuase, sought financial improvement through spiritual means and connected online with a man named Nana Atta, who allegedly posed as a fetish priest.
Atta, currently at large, reportedly instructed Frimpong to procure a human skull for the ritual. On October 25, 2024, Frimpong allegedly met Mohammed, a gravedigger at Awudome Cemetery, who provided the skull after a GH¢600 payment reportedly facilitated by Atta.
Later that day, Frimpong was apprehended by police near Odorgono Secondary School, where officers found the skull in his backpack. Frimpong identified Mohammed as the source, leading to Mohammed’s arrest.
In court, Frimpong initially pleaded guilty, but the presiding judge, Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul Baasit, entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.
Mohammed also pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case is ongoing as authorities continue their investigation.
Court Proceedings and Bail Request
Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, leading the prosecution, opposed bail, citing the active investigation, which includes efforts to locate Atta and verify details at the cemetery.
He also highlighted concerns over the accused’s lack of permanent residence, suggesting they might not return to court if released on bail.
Invoking Section 96(5)(a) and (b) of Act 30, the court denied bail, ordering both men to remain in custody until the next hearing on November 15, 2024, and instructing the prosecution to expedite the investigation.
Further Steps
The police are continuing their search for Nana Atta.
The human skull, a key piece of evidence, has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary as the investigation proceeds.
