The Dansoman Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul Baasit, has remanded a 40-year-old mason, Dossu John, into custody on charges of theft, unlawful possession of narcotics, and carrying offensive weapons.
John, who pleaded not guilty, is set to reappear in court on January 24, 2025.
The incident occurred during the inauguration ceremony of President John Dramani Mahama at Independence Square, amidst jubilant crowds.
Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder told the court that John had stolen a Tecno Camon 301 phone, valued at GH¢3,500.00, from the back pocket of George Amadu, a landscape contractor.
John reportedly passed the phone to an accomplice, who managed to escape.
With the assistance of police officers, Amadu apprehended the accused. A subsequent search uncovered a kitchen knife, a dagger, two rolls of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp, two human teeth, a charm, and other suspicious items.
The accused was unable to provide reasonable explanations for possessing the items. Due to the seriousness of the charges, John, a resident of Ashaiman, has been denied bail and remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
Both cases underscore the court’s commitment to ensuring justice is served in matters of fraud, theft, and public safety.
