The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA), Bawku Chapter, has strongly condemned the latest attack on travellers along the Bawku-Bolgatanga highway, where a bus under military escort was ambushed by suspected armed assailants.
The incident, which occurred near Bazua in the Binduri district, resulted in the tragic death of one individual and left at least eight others injured.
This marks the fourth attack on a military-escorted convoy on the highway since President John Dramani Mahama took office. The recurrence of such violent incidents has raised serious concerns about the security measures in place to protect travellers on this critical route.
In a statement issued by MAYA, the group expressed frustration over what it described as the military’s inability to neutralize or apprehend the perpetrators despite multiple attacks. The association questioned the effectiveness of the current security strategy and called for urgent intervention by the government and security agencies.
“The continued failure to deter, arrest, or eliminate these threats not only endangers innocent travelers but also undermines public confidence in the security forces,” the statement read.
The group further urged the government to conduct a thorough review of the security situation in Bawku and along the Bawku-Bolga highway to ensure that military operations are effective in safeguarding lives and property. Additionally, MAYA called on the Ghana Armed Forces to reassess their escort strategies and take decisive action against the armed groups responsible for the attacks.
MAYA also demanded an independent investigation by the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior, and the National Security Council into the persistent attacks, including a review of security protocols and intelligence-gathering efforts.
With growing fears over the safety of travelers, the association stressed the urgent need for concrete action to prevent further loss of life and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Government officials and security agencies are yet to respond to the latest attack. However, the incident has once again heightened tensions in the region, prompting calls for immediate and decisive measures to restore peace and security on the highway.
