The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) says its members have resumed duties at the Central Laboratory of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The union says the decision follows the appointment of the hospital’s Director of Pharmacy, Dr. Charles Ofei-Palm, as acting head of the laboratory pending a crucial meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 12.
Speaking to Citi News in Accra on Thursday May 7, the Chairman of MELPWU- Korle Bu chapter, John Kofi Nakoja, said the union hopes to reach a final resolution on the ongoing leadership dispute.
The newly appointed acting head of the Korle Bu Central laboratory, Dr. Charles Nii Kwade Ofei-Palm, while confirming his appointment, said he would serve as a bridge between the two factions to help resolve the issue permanently.
However, the Union states that, it has officially been informed through a letter dated 5th May, 2026 with reference number LE/43/223/01 that the Ministry of Health has constituted a Three-member Technical Review Committee to facilitate an amicable, objective, and sustainable resolution of the issue under reference.
Accordingly, it reiterated it demands as follows:
• Immediate reinstatement of the duly appointed Head of Department (Dr. Michael Amo-Omari) who has been unjustifiably removed from his role;
• Establishment of a clear leadership structure for laboratory services and a separate regulatory framework to be the sole body coordinating activities of practitioners of the medical laboratory profession to ensure accountability in laboratory service delivery in Ghana;
• Appropriate administrative action to address the apparent conflict of interest, bias, and conduct of the Board Chairman, Prof Titus Beyuo (a physician and Former General Secretary of the GMA), CEO of the KBTH (Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam), the Director of Medical Affairs, the HR Director and Dr. Frank Owusu – Sekyere (Immediate Past Chairman of KODA) whose actions continue to fuel instability and tension within the central laboratory and the institution as whole.
The Union says it is committed to constructive engagement with all relevant stakeholders toward a lawful, professional, and lasting resolution of these matters. It further said the ultimatum in its earlier notice of strike for the relevant stakeholders to address the above concerns, remain in force, as its stance remain unchanged.
It further urge all parties to exercise restraint, professionalism, and responsibility in public discourse on matters affecting healthcare delivery and public confidence.
Collaboration among healthcare professionals must exist without domination, interference, or professional overreach.
MELPWU assured the general public that Medical Laboratory Scientists remain committed to delivering accurate, timely, and reliable diagnostic services in the interest of patient care, a statement signed by group’s General Secretary DR. Cephas Kofi Akortor said.
