The Methodist Church Ghana has launched its 190th-anniversary celebration, marking nearly two centuries of spreading the gospel and contributing to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
The launch event, held with pomp and ceremony, featured the unveiling of the anniversary logo by the Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, joined by the Superintendent Minister of the Dzorwulu Circuit, Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey, and other ministers of the church.
The event was accompanied by spirited melodies from the church’s brigade, symbolizing the joy of the milestone.
The celebration, which begins in January 2025, includes a series of activities designed to engage members and impact communities.
Highlights of the program include a tree-planting exercise across all dioceses, an anniversary lecture, an inter-diocesan quiz competition, a diocesan feast for members, and a homecoming celebration for members of the church in the diaspora.
The anniversary will culminate in a musical concert and a thanksgiving service in August 2025, to be held across all societies of the church.
Preaching on the theme “Covenant” from John 15 and Genesis 12, The Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu urged Christians to renew their relationship with God as they embark on the new year.
He emphasized that Jesus is the ark that restores and provides victory for humankind, symbolizing the blessings that flow from a relationship with God.
The Presiding Bishop called on Christians to embrace obedience to the word of God, which redeems and protects mankind.
Using examples from scripture, he illustrated how individuals who honoured their covenant with God were rewarded with divine blessings.
“Every covenant comes with responsibilities. God expects man to show genuine repentance, be obedient, attend to His work with reverence, and bear His identity by producing fruit,” he stated.
Reflecting on the church’s impact, The Most Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu highlighted the transformation of lives through the gospel and the church’s contributions to education and healthcare.
He added that the 190th anniversary provides an opportunity to evaluate past achievements and strategize for future improvements.
“We don’t always want to dwell on the past. The past is important, but it must guide us in making decisions for the future. We will strengthen our presence in education, healthcare, and other social services while continuing to preach the gospel and ensure the salvation of souls,” he concluded.
The Methodist Church Ghana, established nearly two centuries ago, remains a cornerstone of spiritual growth and community development in the country, and this anniversary celebration will reaffirm its commitment to serving God and society.
