The Methodist Church Ghana has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of young applicants during a military recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
The Church also extended sympathy to victims of a related incident at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where several applicants were injured following a sudden crowd surge during a similar recruitment activity. Church leaders say the nation has been left heartbroken by the loss of young lives who had gathered to pursue their dreams of serving Ghana.
In a statement, the Church described the incidents as a profound national tragedy and offered heartfelt condolences to all affected families. It also invoked Psalm 34:18, reminding the grieving that “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” According to the Church, the simultaneous nature of the two incidents highlights the urgent need for stronger safety structures during large public exercises. Leaders further prayed for the swift and complete recovery of all injured persons.
The Methodist Church Ghana has urged the military authorities and state institutions to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the accidents at both El-Wak and Baba Yara.
The Church emphasized that immediate action is needed to ensure public safety and protect the dignity of citizens, particularly the youth, during national recruitment processes. It reaffirmed its solidarity with the bereaved families and the entire nation, committing the departed souls into God’s care and praying for their peaceful rest.
