Metro Mass records over ¢29.3m in consecutive monthly revenues

Deputy Managing Director of the Metro Mass Transit Limited, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, has disclosed that despite the challenges and the mess inherited from the previous government, the company has managed to generate significant revenue.

These gains, he stated, were made in recent months under the current administration, even as he lamented a historically low operational fleet.

Speaking in an interview, Apaw Wiredu detailed the company’s financial turnaround, attributing it to new operational measures, including automation and e-ticketing.

He noted that from August to early November 2025, MMTL achieved over GHC29.3 million in consecutive monthly revenues, reporting GHC15.2 million from August to September and approximately GHC14.1 million from October 1 to November 1. It has been back-to-back. That is why President John Dramani Mahama has seen the remarkable achievements and planned to add more fleets to our buses… These measures have given us the highest revenue in the history of the company.

He said the current management took over a challenging system with only 85 routes operational and just 115 operational buses nationwide.

This is a considerable shortfall, as the company is expected to serve 385 routes, leaving over 300 routes unattended.

Apaw Wiredu went on to state that the welfare of workers and salary increments have all improved since President John Dramani Mahama took over.

He said that since 2018, the previous government failed to pay statutory payments due workers, including their Social Security and insurance, but since this government took over, all these payments have been made, with all existing debt being paid.

Salary increments, he said, had gone up by 25 per cent for critical stages, including drivers, maintenance teams, and conductors, while senior staff had theirs increased by 20 per cent.

He stressed that the President signed a performance contract with the new management and that he informed them of their significant achievements.

Haroun Apaw Wiredu said, the previous government left behind a debt of over Ghc 135 million and three months’ salary arrears, but the new management has settled all the salary arrears.
