A group of agitated youth, believed to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stormed the collation centre for the Techiman South constituency on Sunday afternoon, demanding the immediate declaration of the parliamentary election results.
Armed with firearms and other weapons, the protesters descended on the facility located at the Techiman Divisional Police Headquarters.
The mob caused significant damage to the police building, shattering glass windows and setting fire to electoral materials, including certified results from the Electoral Commission (EC).
Eyewitnesses reported that the angry group also broke into an office where the police had sheltered Martin Adjei Korsah, the incumbent Member of Parliament, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Oduro Amaning, the Deputy Bono East Regional Police Commander. The two were rescued unharmed by military personnel, but some police officers sustained injuries during the chaos.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) learned that the protesters were expressing their frustration over delays in declaring the parliamentary results. They accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the police of conspiring to manipulate the outcome in favor of Mr. Korsah.
William Bamfo-Apori, the Techiman South Electoral Officer, confirmed in an interview that the declaration of results was impossible. “We cannot announce the parliamentary results now because all election materials have been destroyed in the fire,” he stated.
Following the intervention of the military, calm has been restored to the area. Investigations into the incident are underway.
