As part of efforts to control diabetes in the country, the Ministry of Health has launched a project to offer special training to some selected healthcare professionals on diabetes care.
The project is being implemented in partnership with a French pharmaceutical multinational, Sanofi, under a flagship programme known as “Access to diabetes care programme for Ghana Patients”.
Dr. Baffour Awuah, Technical Coordination Director for Ministry, on behalf of the Minister, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu launched the project.
On April 17, 2023, the Ministry and Sanofi signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to tackle the growing Diabetes crisis and improve access to diabetes care in Ghana.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are about 2.4 million people living with diabetes and approximately 7.5% of adults have Type-2 Diabetes in Ghana.
Despite the alarming prevalence of diabetes in Ghana, many people may have still not been diagnosed and there are fears the numbers may be higher.
The Government of Ghana, with support from WHO and other partners, is however stepping up its fight to defeat diabetes.
In May 2022, Ghana joined other WHO Member States to set global targets for diabetes as part of recommendations to strengthen and monitor diabetes responses within national non-communicable disease (NCD) programmes.
