The Ministry of Labour and Employment Relations (MLER) through the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has scheduled a meeting with the leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association Ghana (CETAG) today Monday, August 19.
The meeting is in response to a nationwide strike by members of CETAG for the past two months raising concerns of unpaid allowances and poor working conditions.
CETAG began the nationwide strike on June 14 and demanded the payment of one month’s salary to each member for additional duties performed in 2022, and applying agreed rates of allowances payable to public universities.
Meanwhile, on June 20, the National Labour Commission (NLC) secured an interlocutory injunction to halt the ongoing strike by CETAG.
Despite the injunction, CETAG continued leading to a hearing where the Commission announced plans to sue the government to enforce the arbitral award in CETAG’s favour.
The nationwide strike action brought a halt to academic activities on all 46 campuses of colleges of education with leadership of CETAG proposing the closure of the colleges until an agreement is reached.
However, GTEC opposed the closure of colleges stating that there has been a breakthrough with CETAG and members will soon return to various campuses.
The President of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) Prof. Samuel Atintono, has therefore assured the nation that they were ready to fix the academic calendar to restore normalcy to academic work as soon as CETAG members return to campus.
