The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned the arrest and remand of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, describing it as part of a growing culture of political persecution.
Abronye was arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, and remanded into police custody until Friday, September 12, on charges of offensive conduct. His arrest comes after he reportedly petitioned several foreign embassies seeking political asylum over alleged threats to his life.
In a statement signed by Deputy Minority Whip Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Caucus said the move demonstrates the government’s use of state institutions to intimidate opponents. It cited harassment of journalists, civil society actors, and political figures as part of a wider pattern of suppression.
The Minority also criticised what it described as government neglect of urgent crises, pointing to communal violence in northern Ghana that has left at least 31 dead and displaced nearly 50,000 people, with some seeking refuge in Côte d’Ivoire.
Additionally, the Caucus raised concerns about alleged threats against opposition leaders and urged the Ghana Police Service to rise above partisanship and conduct thorough investigations.
The statement warned that judicial persecution, executive overreach, and security failures are undermining Ghana’s democracy, pledging the Minority’s resolve to protect the rule of law and human rights.
