Members of Parliament have called for swift disciplinary action against all the Police Officers involved in the recent sporadic shooting in Tamale that led to the death of a JHS graduate and injury to four others.
The Minority Leader and MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu in whose Constituency the incident happened in a statement on the floor said Police brutalities are becoming too much in Tamale.
There was a clash between the Police and the youth of Lamashegu in Tamale. This resulted in the death of an 18-year-old boy named Abdul Hakim Yakubu, one of the Junior High School Students of the Umar Al Mutar who just wrote his Basic School Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E).
The violence started after the Police tried to arrest a 24-year-old man, Rahaman Jabir, who sought refuge at the Lamashe Naa Palace.
Rahaman was said to be driving an unregistered vehicle when the Police stopped him, but when he refused to stop, he was pursued by the Police, and in the process, he was shot.
The 24-year-old managed to drive to the Lamashegu Chief Palace, but the Police pursued him there.
The youth of the area got angered for what they described as total disrespect to the traditional ruler leading to unrest. The Member of Parliament for the Constituency, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu was not happy about the occurrence.
Other MPs were equally livid about the development. Meanwhile, the Police Service has interdicted six officers in connection with the incident.
Other matters in Parliament
Still on the floor of Parliament, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Atta and the Minister for Communication and Digitalization Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful were in the House to respond to questions relating to their Ministries. Mrs. Ekuful responded to questions about mobile telephone connectivity to various communities as well as the government’s purchase of AirtelTigo.
Mr. Amoako Atta for his part answered questions relating to construction of roads. One question that stood out was in respect of an earlier suggestion by the Minister that about 4000km of roads have been constructed between 2017 and 2022.
The first Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu who was presiding, gave the Minister up to Friday, February 18, 2022, to provide the list and details of the roads constructed.
