The National Identification Authority (NIA) has indicated that it start issuing Ghana cards to minors between the ages of 6 to 14, beginning Monday, October 7, 2024. .
The upcoming exercise forms part of the government’s ongoing effort to ensure every citizen is captured in the national identification system.
The initial phase of the registration will begin in schools across selected districts, a strategic move to provide easy access to eligible children, according to the NIA.
The NIA aims to ease the process and make it convenient for parents and guardians to register their children.
Alfred Gazari, Deputy director in – charge of operations at the NIA in an interview, outlined the importance of need to register these minors.
He emphasised that incorporating children into the national database is essential to achieving comprehensive identification for all Ghanaians.
“It’s important that we do such registration for children between 6 to 14 years. It’s part of the plan to register every Ghanaian in the country.
“We have done over 15 years, we have started with zero to 5 years and this is the last phase of the registration for all Ghanaians as well as those outside the country.”
“Everybody needs the card, without it, you can’t do anything meaningful. It’s important we rope the 6 and 14 years in.”
