A 29-year-old mobile banker has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing over GH¢70,000 from his employer, Abii National Savings and Loans.

The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Jojo Amoah Hagan, handed down the sentence, following the conviction of Aziz Sulemana on a charge of stealing under Section 124(1) of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The offence occurred on May 9, 2025, at the Mataheko branch of the financial institution, located in Kaneshie, Accra. Sulemana, in his capacity as a mobile banker, was responsible for collecting cash deposits from clients and forwarding them to the branch for processing.

According to the case facts, a routine review by the branch manager, Jennifer Benning, revealed inconsistencies in the daily cash returns. An initial discrepancy of GH¢45,000 triggered an internal inquiry, which was subsequently escalated to the Kaneshie Police after confirmation of missing funds.

Sulemana was arrested and, during interrogation, admitted to misappropriating the funds. A forensic audit was conducted in his presence, which established that the total amount diverted was GH¢70,840—significantly more than the figure initially reported.

He acknowledged the audit findings in writing and confirmed the total amount taken. Prior to the court proceedings, Sulemana refunded GH¢12,000, reducing the amount outstanding. He also made a further GH¢1,000 payment before sentencing, leaving a balance of GH¢55,840.

The prosecution, led by Police Officer Patience Avorgah, presented detailed documentation and testimony outlining how the offence was carried out and the steps taken by the bank to recover the funds.

The court, in addition to the custodial sentence, ordered that Sulemana repay the remaining balance to Abii National Savings and Loans.
