The Minister for Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has indicated that the MoFA will provide the needed leadership to change the trajectory to regulate and develop tree crop production sustainably with the goal of institutionalizing a highly developed, diversified tree crop industry in Ghana.
The minister said this when he met with a senior agricultural economist, Dr. Ashwini Rekha Sabastian, from the World Bank Group.
During the meeting, Dr. Bryan Acheampong was briefed on several transformational impacts made by the World Bank on Ghana’s agriculture sector, where he acknowledged and appreciated the unique support provided by the World Bank Group towards developing agriculture over the years, particularly food systems resilience projects, the cocoa sector, and the technical assistance offered to the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) for the development of a five-year strategy and implementation plan.
The minister also appealed to the group that, given the technical capacity and expertise of MoFA, it should be given the free hand to develop programs and projects that will address the gaps in the sector.
The minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Abetifi in the Eastern region, has since his appointment as sector minister vowed to improve the agriculture sector as he believes agriculture is the way to go to boost the country’s economy.
