Accra, Oct 9 – A 23-year-old motorcyclist, Elvis Ashitey, also known as “Ratty,” has been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court for attempted robbery at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Ashitey, charged with “attempt to commit crime, namely robbery,” pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, ordered him to reappear on October 23, 2024.

Chief Inspector Josephine Lamptey, leading the prosecution, informed the court that the complainant is a level 300 Planning student at Central University, Miotso, in the Greater Accra Region.

Ashitey, a motorcyclist, resides in Shukura, Accra.

On October 2, 2024, around 2:05 p.m., the complainant, along with other nursing students, had just completed clinical rounds at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

As the complainant crossed the road to board the school bus near the hospital mortuary, Ashitey, on a motorcycle, suddenly approached her and forcefully grabbed her handbag containing personal items, including an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The complainant resisted, and during the struggle, both fell to the ground. Witnesses nearby rushed to her aid and managed to apprehend Ashitey.

The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Patrol Team arrived shortly after and escorted Ashitey to the police station.

The complainant, who sustained bruises and body pains, was given a police medical report after filing her complaint.

According to the prosecution, Ashitey admitted to the offence in his caution statement.
