MTN Ghana is advising its millions of Mobile Money (MoMo) customers to prepare for a six-hour service interruption scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The telecommunications leader says all MoMo services will be unavailable from 12:00 midnight to 6:00 a.m. to allow for a critical system upgrade.

The temporary shutdown will affect deposits, withdrawals, person-to-person transfers, and merchant payments.

In an interview with Citi fm, Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer of Mobile Money Limited, explained:

“Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on 17th August 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 a.m. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable. This upgrade is to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.”

The upgrade is aimed at enhancing service delivery, with previous modernisations focusing on faster transactions, stronger fraud protection, and the introduction of new digital features.

MTN Ghana has assured customers that normal services will resume immediately after the maintenance period, and all funds will remain safe.

The announcement is a crucial advisory for individuals and businesses that rely heavily on MoMo for daily transactions, as the platform has become a key driver of financial inclusion and handles billions of cedis in payments each month.

Customers are urged to complete all urgent transactions ahead of the scheduled downtime.
