Former NPA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid has officially declared his intention to contest the position of National Vice Chairman in the New Patriotic Party’s upcoming internal elections.

The announcement, delivered in a strongly worded statement addressed to “Fellow Kukrudites”, comes after what Dr Abdul-Hamid described as “persistent calls” from the party’s rank and file to step back into the front line of national executive leadership.

The former minister for information, Dr Abdul-Hamid, is a seasoned politician and scholar, framed his candidacy not as a pursuit of personal ambition but as a response to a “clarion call” to support the party’s “collective revival”.

He emphasised that he is offering his extensive institutional memory and strategic insight to help return the NPP to what he termed its “rightful place in leadership”.

Tracing his lineage within the party back to its very foundation, Dr Abdul-Hamid reminded supporters of his presence at the 1992 bonfire in Victoria Park, Cape Coast, which marked the historic transition from the Danquah-Busia Club to the NPP.

His political resume is one of longevity and resilience. Having served as the party’s first elected National Youth Organiser, he also spent a decade as the spokesperson for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

His experience is seasoned by both victory and defeat, having previously contested for the roles of national organiser in 2001 and general secretary in 2005.

“I have been forged in the fire of battle,” the statement read. “I have won some and lost some. I have the scars to show.”

Positioning himself as a “scholar in the true sense of the word”, Dr Abdul-Hamid suggested his role would be one of strategic support, providing “intellectual firepower” to whoever eventually emerges as the party’s national chairman.
