Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, a respected statesman and founding pillar of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed deep frustration over being sidelined by the party amid its ongoing internal challenges regarding the election of new national executives and a flagbearer.
“I don’t understand why my own party, the NPP, has sidelined me,” the former president lamented.
He made the remarks during a courtesy visit by aspiring presidential candidate Bryan Acheampong. President Kufuor said it was troubling that, despite his decades of service and leadership including serving as President of Ghana from 2001 to 2008 he is now excluded from key party decision making processes.
“I’ve been in this party all these years, and I became President for two terms from 2001 to 2008, but the system thinks it’s wise to ignore and sideline me,” he added.
The former president also revealed that he had been snubbed during a key National Council meeting an important gathering where significant decisions about the party’s direction are made. He noted that such exclusions reflect a broader disregard for the party’s founding leaders and threaten internal unity.
Kufuor’s remarks come at a time when the NPP is grappling with rising internal divisions and power struggles as it looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.
