Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has clarified his statement, which said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won’t hand over power to the New Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Acheampong, while addressing NPP members after a unity walk at Mpraeso in the Eastern Region in April this year, said his party will ensure that it does everything possible to be able to win the 2024 general elections and to ensure they continue to stay in power.

However, he has for the first time shared his displeasure with how his comments were misinterpreted to imply that the NPP will maintain power at all costs, even if they lose.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Morning Show, he explained that what he said was not to plunge the country into chaos.

“No media house ever called me to ask for explanations. I know exactly why I said that, and it was never to plunge the country into chaos, but I was saying to the supporters that the NPP will ensure that they work to stabilize the economy, which will bring relief to Ghanaians, so they vote for the party again to win the elections,” he said.

Additionally, he stated that the Electoral Commission has the authority to proclaim the victor of the elections and that its decision will be definitive.

“It is not the NPP that declares elections and when they do, no one can stand against their decision. Past presidents could not do that and so President Akufo-Addo will also not do that. Once the EC declares, it is final, but the fact is that I believe if we do our things right, the EC will declare in favour of us,” he added.
