A devastating fire outbreak at the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) warehouse in Tamale has resulted in significant losses, destroying transformers, insulators, and other critical electrical equipment.
The fire, which reportedly ignited around 14:23 pm, spread rapidly, posing a severe threat to the facility before emergency services intervened. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) swiftly responded to the incident, deploying fire tenders from both the metropolitan station and the hospital to combat the blaze.
However, due to the intensity of the flames, additional water supply was required to bring the fire under control.
The firefighters tactically contained the fire at 16:49pm and fully extinguished it at 17:52 pm
Firefighting Efforts and Challenges
Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Baba Hudu, confirmed that the response team arrived on time and took immediate action to contain the fire.
“We immediately brought two fire tenders, but because of the intensity of the fire, the two tenders weren’t enough to fully extinguish it. We had to coordinate with the water company to supply us with additional water,” he explained.
Despite the difficulties in containing the flames, the firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the facility or causing extensive damage beyond the warehouse.
Impact on NEDCo Operations
While the destruction of essential equipment raises concerns about the company’s ability to maintain seamless power distribution, NEDCo has reassured the public that the fire has not disrupted electricity supply in the area.
Corporate Communications Director of NEDCo, Maxwell Kotoka, emphasized that the affected warehouse primarily served as a storage facility for company materials and did not directly impact power distribution infrastructure.
“Supply to the warehouse has been affected, so the warehouse itself doesn’t have power. However, we are working to resolve the situation, and at this point, we believe that no external institutions have been affected,” Kotoka stated.
NEDCo has mobilized technical teams to assess the extent of the damage and explore measures to replace the lost equipment. While the immediate focus remains on stabilizing the situation, concerns have been raised about the potential financial burden of replacing the destroyed transformers and insulators, which are critical to the company’s operations.
Investigation into the Cause of the Fire
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with preliminary reports suggesting that it may have originated from a transformer located near the warehouse.
Experts from the Ghana Fire Service, in collaboration with NEDCo’s technical team, are working to determine whether an electrical fault or external factors contributed to the outbreak.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about fire safety measures at essential utility installations.
Analysts argue that given the crucial role of NEDCo in power distribution across northern Ghana, more stringent fire prevention strategies must be implemented to protect key infrastructure from similar disasters in the future.
As investigations continue, NEDCo has assured residents that all necessary steps will be taken to mitigate the impact of the fire and prevent any future recurrence.
