The Northern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) has condemned the attack on Citi News’ Northern Regional Correspondent, Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira  during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the Yendi constituency on January 27.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the association, Yakubu Abdul Majeed, he described the act as old-fashioned and uncalled for especially coming from a law maker of the constituency, Farouk Aliu Mahama.

“The GJA strongly condemns this antediluvian act. It is very sad and disturbing that this boorish and vulgar act was perpetrated by no less a person than the MP of the area. This is very shameful and must be condemned by all well-meaning citizens”, he said.

As a matter of urgency, the association , has called on the Ghana Police Service to arrest the constituency MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama over such shameful act and willingly to work hand-in-hand to seek justice for their member.

“We are by this press statement calling on the Ghana Police Service to, as a matter of urgency, arrest the MP over this barbaric act. The GJA will work assiduously with the Police to ensure that justice is served in this matter”, the chairman cautioned.

Mr. Yakubu reassured that, the association will ensure that the safety of its members during the course of their work.

“We, the Regional Executive, together with the National Executive, reaffirm our readiness to protect all journalists in the region, especially in the performance of their lawful duties without hindrance,” portion of the statement read.

GJA cautioned politicians and the general public that, during this political season, it will not tolerate any form of abuse directed at Journalists.

Citi News’ Northern Regional Correspondent, Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira  during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the Yendi constituency on January 27, was attacked by the  Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama and his supporters while he was covering proceedings in Yendi.

He was slapped by the MP while interviewing him on why violence erupted during the counting of the ballots, while the MP’s supporters pounced on him.
