A formal appeal has been issued to former President John Agyekum Kufuor by NABCO trainees, questioning his endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership amid unresolved issues with the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) program.
In an open letter signed by Nana Tekyi Eric, Public Relations Officer for the Coalition of NABCO Trainees (CONAT), the trainees expressed disappointment over unpaid arrears and unfulfilled promises made by Dr. Bawumia, who oversaw the program.
The trainees noted that despite Dr. Bawumia’s promise in June 2024 to work with the Finance Ministry to settle their outstanding nine-month arrears, dating back to 2022, this commitment remains unfulfilled.
“Mr. Former President, how can we trust a leader who could not manage the NABCO program effectively?” the letter read, urging former President Kufuor to use his influence to advocate for the payment of arrears to the trainees.
The letter also highlighted concerns about unkept promises of permanent employment for NABCO participants, further questioning Dr. Bawumia’s suitability for leadership.
“With this bad record, how do we believe that Ghana needs a leader like Dr. Bawumia to help the nation rise quickly?” CONAT asked, appealing to the Former President to reconsider his endorsement in light of these concerns.
CONAT underscored former President Kufuor’s respected position as a statesman and urged him to advocate for the welfare of the youth affected by the NABCO program.
The trainees asked that Kufuor counsel Dr. Bawumia and the NPP to settle all outstanding arrears and fulfill the promises made to NABCO trainees.
As the country nears election season, this appeal from CONAT reflects growing concerns among affected youth and highlights the financial and professional struggles NABCO trainees continue to face.
