A British woman has been arrested at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to smuggle cannabis out of Ghana, marking the second drug-related arrest involving a British national at the airport in less than 24 hours.
The woman, a passenger on British Airways flight BA 2066 from Accra to Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom, was intercepted during pre-boarding security procedures. A detailed inspection of her luggage led to the discovery of 32 neatly packed slabs of compressed substances concealed in a suitcase.
Subsequent field tests conducted by authorities identified the contents as cannabis, weighing approximately 17.72 kilograms. The suspect was taken into custody at the airport and later transferred to the headquarters of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) for further processing and investigations.
Her arrest follows a similar operation on May 18, when NACOC officers seized 53.6 kilograms of suspected narcotics from another British passenger attempting to travel through the same airport.
The two back-to-back arrests have raised fresh concerns about Ghana’s role as a potential transit point for international drug trafficking. Security at KIA has since been reinforced as part of ongoing efforts to combat the smuggling of illicit substances through the country’s ports of entry.
Investigations are underway to determine whether the two incidents are connected and to identify any broader networks involved in the attempted smuggling operations. The suspects are expected to face prosecution under Ghana’s narcotics laws once investigations are concluded.
