The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) says its cells are overcrowded with people arrested for illicit drug use, with some suspects now being transferred to the custody of the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) due to lack of space.

Deputy Director-General of NACOC, Alexander Twum-Barimah, revealed this on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, August 25. He noted this following a new documentary on illicit drug abuse in Kumasi by JoyNews, Deadly Doses.

“In the last few months, I can tell you that even our cells are full, our cells are full, we don’t even have a space, now we keep some inmates with NIB because we don’t have space for them.”

“So it tells you the kind of work we are doing, so we will not stop or relax on this effort,” he added

Mr Twum-Barimah explained that going after the masterminds behind the trade would cut off supply, making it difficult for users to access drugs.

According to him, despite the large number of arrests, drug abuse continues to persist in the country. He argued that this underscores the need for a new strategy that targets drug lords and dealers rather than users.

“We will go the extra mile to make sure that all these persons who are behind these drug centres will be taken out,” he assured the public.
