The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that no lives were lost following the torrential rains that lashed parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, May 18.
According to Chief Disaster Control Officer Mohammed Jafaro, the agency received a high volume of emergency calls from residents in flood-affected communities, including Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie. NADMO promptly dispatched response teams to provide assistance and assess the situation on the ground.
“We have responded to numerous distress calls from residents in areas like Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie. Fortunately, as of now, there are no reported casualties,” Mr. Jafaro said during a media interview.
He noted that inadequate drainage systems, poor sanitation, and structural design flaws were key factors behind the extensive flooding witnessed in some areas.
“In many of the communities we visited, we observed either the absence of proper drainage or existing drains clogged with refuse. In other places, engineering defects in road or building construction worsened the flood impact,” he explained.
Sunday’s rainfall led to significant flooding in several parts of the capital, including Weija, Adabraka, Adjei-Kojo, Kaneshie, Adentan-Dodowa, and sections of the Tema enclave. Some major roadways, such as the stretch between Awudome Roundabout and the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, became impassable, causing severe traffic disruptions and leaving many commuters stranded.
In light of the incident, NADMO has issued a public alert urging citizens to stay vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas, especially during and immediately after heavy downpours.
The agency emphasized the importance of swift communication in times of emergency and has activated several hotlines for public use.
Emergency Numbers Provided by NADMO:
- 0302 964 884
- 0299 350 699

NADMO has also directed residents to follow its official social media accounts on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok via @nadmoghana for updates and safety tips.
Authorities are advising the public to take necessary precautions, such as staying indoors during storms, safeguarding electrical appliances, and keeping emergency contact information readily accessible. NADMO also reiterated its call for community cooperation in maintaining clean gutters and avoiding waste disposal into drainage systems.
With weather forecasts predicting more rainfall in the coming days, NADMO says it remains on high alert and is working closely with other emergency services to ensure a coordinated response to any further developments.
