The Western North Regional NADMO Boss, Mr Samuel Adu Agyei has made it clear that poor sanitation and unapproved settlement are the main causes of flooding in Ghana.

He said this during an interview with a  morning show host Yaw Omono Asamoah; on 14th October, 2021.

“Dumping rubbish anyhow, such as in gutters and rivers can result in flooding when they choke the gutters. ’Filtering the environment anyhow, building structures to block roads and streets are the agents of flooding’”. He said on Liberty FM

According to him, flooding may lead to loss of properties and even lives as it happened in 2016 in the Greater Accra region.

“Flooding could lead to loss of property and lives as it suddenly happened at Circle where both water and fire destroyed properties and killed people”. He added.

Mr Agyei advised the Assemblies to strengthen their bye laws to deal with recalcitrant individuals who go contrary to these laws and effect cause flooding.

He said that periodical communal labour should be encouraged, heaping sand on the road side should be stopped and those living in low land areas should relocate themselves.

“The Municipal and the District Assemblies should have sanitation guards and strengthen their bye laws, to prosecute those who go contrary to it; to serve as deterrent to others. We should organize communal labour periodically and stop heaping at roadside.” He advised.

Mr Samuel Adu Agyei cautioned the residents of Sefwi Wiawso and its environs to prevent flooding than to wait for NADMO’s compensation.

“We should be aware NADMO’s support can never satisfy for very less. Therefore prevention is better than cure.” He added
