A delegation from Namibia’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD) as part of a study tour aimed at sharing knowledge and learning from Ghana’s digitalisation journey.

The visit focused on exploring Ghana’s successes and challenges in implementing its digitalisation agenda, with the aim of fostering future collaborations in areas like data protection and communication technology, while promoting mutual growth and development.

The delegation, led by Mr. Shasimana Uugulu, Deputy Director of Production at Namibia’s Ministry, expressed keen interest in learning from Ghana’s best practices, particularly in Data Protection and Communications. Mr. Uugulu emphasized that the visit was not only about learning but also about exploring avenues for collaboration, including the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two ministries to facilitate knowledge sharing and expertise transfer.

On behalf of the Sector Minister, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Director of Finance and Administration at MoCD, Mr. Alfred Nortey, warmly welcomed the Namibian delegation. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship for the mutual benefit of both countries.

“We are honored to welcome our guests from Namibia and look forward to engaging in productive dialogue to reinforce collaboration between our two nations,” Mr. Nortey remarked.

Providing context for the visit, Mr. Nortey explained that the engagement stemmed from the 5th Session of the Namibian-Ghana Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation, held in Swakopmund, Namibia, in July 2024. He noted that this partnership reflects both countries’ commitment to fostering growth, development, and knowledge exchange in key sectors driving their economies.

Mr. Nortey highlighted Ghana’s progress in its digital transformation efforts, positioning the country as a leader in Africa’s digital economy. “Ghana has embarked on an ambitious digital transformation agenda to lead the digital economy in Africa. Initiatives implemented in recent years have significantly advanced Ghana’s digitization efforts, including governance reforms and financial inclusion. Our strides in Data Protection, through the establishment of the Ghana Data Protection Commission (DPC), ensure that personal data is managed responsibly, securely, and transparently.”

Mr. Kwame Baah-Acheamfuor, Director of International Affairs at MoCD, briefed the Namibian delegation on Ghana’s achievements in digitalisation and the upcoming launch of the country’s Digital Economic Policy. He also discussed data governance and the legal frameworks for safeguarding personal and institutional data.

The Namibian delegation also participated in presentations from key institutions, including the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) and the Data Protection Commission (DPC), showcasing Ghana’s achievements in the digital sector.

The meeting facilitated an exchange of valuable insights, particularly concerning the development of ICT sectors in both countries, with a focus on data protection. MoCD reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with Namibia to drive technological advancements that benefit both nations.

Other members of the Namibian delegation included Deputy Director of ICT Development, Mr. Fillemon Johannes; Deputy Director of Audio Visual, Mr. Reagan Malumo; Deputy Director of the Namibia Film Commission, Ms. Florence Hafene; Director of Information at the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Bertha Amakali; and the 1st Secretary at the Namibian High Commission, Jacky Hindjou.
