A General Assembly meeting at the Ejisu Municipal Assembly, scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2026, was abruptly suspended following an unexpected national security screening exercise that disrupted proceedings and created tension among assembly members.

The meeting, which was expected to deliberate on key developmental and administrative matters affecting the municipality, had not officially commenced when the incident occurred.

Assembly members who had gathered at the assembly hall told reporter, Samuel Sarkodie, that they were already seated and waiting for proceedings to begin when a group of men dressed in national security uniforms entered the chamber.

According to eyewitness accounts, the officers claimed they had been deployed from the regional level to carry out a security screening exercise.

The operatives reportedly arrived with electronic scanning gadgets and immediately began inspecting the premises and screening individuals present in the hall.

The sudden operation reportedly caused confusion and uneasiness among members of the assembly, with some questioning the motive behind the exercise and why it was conducted during an official meeting without prior notice.

Several assembly members expressed concern that the development disrupted the smooth running of assembly business and could undermine confidence in local governance processes if such interventions continue without proper communication or coordination.

“The meeting was about to start when the officers walked in and began the screening exercise. Many members were surprised because there had been no prior information about such an operation,” one assembly member reportedly stated.

Following consultations among assembly leadership and officials present, the meeting was suspended to allow clarity on the situation and to avoid further tension within the chamber.

As of the time of filing this report, officials from the assembly and the national security apparatus had not publicly disclosed the exact purpose of the screening exercise. It also remains unclear when the suspended meeting will be reconvened.

The incident has since generated discussions among residents and local stakeholders, with many calling for transparency regarding the operation and assurances that official assembly activities will not be unnecessarily disrupted in the future.
