The National Communication Authority (NCA) has disclosed that about 6.1 million Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards have been deactivated since the beginning of the SIM re-registration exercise.
In 2021, the government began a national SIM card re-registration exercise, using the Ghana card.
According to the government, it was necessary for them to embark on the exercise because it would help reduce criminal activities, as well as help them get accurate national data for the NCA.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra today, April 26, 2023, the Director General of the NCA, Mr Joe Anokye said 6.1 million SIM cards have been de-linked from the SIM register.
He indicated that those SIM cards have been deactivated because subscribers completed only stage one of the re-registration exercise.
The Director General of the NCA also added that about 11 million SIM cards will be deactivated by the end of May 2023.
