The Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman Asare, has refuted reports that the Commission took a unilateral decision to use only the Ghana card as the only source of document for voter continuous registration.

According to the commissioner, the decision lay a new Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) on voters’ registration in Parliament was open and clear to all stakeholders.

Dr Asare said the Commission took time to meet with all the stakeholders except the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which was absent during the event.

Speaking on Neat FM’s ‘Me Man Nti’ programme in Accra, he indicated that the NDC was invited to IPAC meetings held on the issue but they failed to attend.

“We met with all the political parties and other stakeholders to deliberate on using the Ghana card as the only source document for registration. It was unanimously agreed but NDC was invited to that meeting and they didn’t attend,” Dr Asare stated.

However, the NDC and other stakeholders have opposed this decision insisting it will disenfranchise a lot of Ghanaians while others have questioned why the EC didn’t engage various stakeholders before coming out with the decision.
