Some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have expressed disappointment over the appointment of Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong as the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) by President John Dramani Mahama.

The group has called on the President to reconsider the decision, citing Sarpong’s alleged ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, January 22, the group acknowledged the President’s efforts in making strategic appointments across various sectors within the first two weeks of his administration.

However, they believe the choice of Mr. Sarpong for such a critical role undermines the contributions of committed NDC members who worked tirelessly to ensure the party’s victory in the 2024 elections.

The group argued that Mr. Sarpong’s previous appointment by former President Nana Akufo-Addo to serve on the governing council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), raises concerns about his loyalty to the NDC agenda.

They further noted his association with other NPP-aligned figures, including Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, who served as the head of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), as troubling.

“We are appalled and completely disgusted by this appointment to the GRA and demand that it be reversed immediately,” the statement read. “If the President fails to act, we will be left with no choice but to embark on protests to express our discontent.”

The group emphasized their respect for President Mahama’s leadership but cautioned that such appointments could erode the trust and high expectations Ghanaians have in the new administration.

They called for the nomination of individuals who align with the values of the NDC and have demonstrated loyalty to the party’s cause.

As of now, the Office of the President has not issued an official response to the concerns raised by the NDC loyalists. The situation continues to generate discussions within political circles, with observers questioning the potential implications of such appointments on party unity and public trust in governance.
