The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for projecting confidence in securing victory in the upcoming December 7 polls.
Addressing journalists during the second edition of The Big Interview in the Kwahu bloc on Friday, December 6, the Abetifi MP questioned the NDC’s historical electoral performance.
According to Dr. Acheampong, the NDC’s strongest showing in Ghana’s elections has been a marginal victory of 50.7%, which occurred during the party’s earlier years under its founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and subsequent leadership of John Mahama.
“NDC doesn’t have the numbers to win elections. They don’t. Check the records. They are always below 50%. Their highest was 50.7%. And I’m saying that NDC has never won an election overwhelmingly in Ghana,” he stated.
While casting doubt on the NDC’s ability to win decisively, Dr. Acheampong acknowledged the party’s position as a formidable opposition force, capable of providing significant competition.
The comments come at a critical time as Ghana’s major political parties gear up for a hotly contested election season, with both the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) expressing confidence in their chances at the polls.
