Tensions ran high in Asante Mampong as angry National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters staged protests for two days, vandalizing property and setting items ablaze at the party office. The unrest was sparked by the reported nomination of Esther Dwomoh as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), a move the supporters vehemently oppose .
On Wednesday and Thursday, irate youth stormed the party office, destroying property and setting items on fire, including office furniture. Police and fire officers intervened to restore order, but no arrests were made. The protesters insisted that only one of the three shortlisted candidates should be nominated for the MCE position: Constituency Chairman Mohammed Kamil, 2024 Parliamentary Candidate Yakubu Yakubu, or leading party member Imoro Iddrisu .
meanwhile, the Mampong NDC Communications Officer Kwaku Bernasko explained that the agitated youth were expressing their displeasure to the national party executives. “We’re ready to support any of the three vetted and shortlisted individuals, but any other nominee will be resisted,” he said. “Imposing an MCE on us will put the NDC party in disarray.”
The controversy surrounds the nomination process for the MCE position. The protesters claim that Esther Dwomoh’s name was floated despite not being among the shortlisted candidates. The NDC party faces internal pressure as supporters demand adherence to the party’s internal processes.
The situation remains tense, with the NDC party struggling to address the concerns of its supporters. The party must navigate this internal conflict to maintain stability and unity within its ranks.
