The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will deploy about 250 joint security officers to oversee the Tamale Central parliamentary primary tomorrow, Saturday, September 6, 2025.

The move is to safeguard the process and ensure peace as the constituency prepares to elect a new parliamentary candidate following the tragic passing of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in last month’s helicopter crash.

The party’s Northern Regional Directorate of Elections and IT, led by Dr. Arnold Mashud Abukari, outlined that voting will start at 9 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. Four ballot boxes have been designated for use, each assigned to a specific electoral area to make the process smoother and more transparent.

Security personnel will enforce strict access rules. Accredited observers will only be stationed at the supporters’ stands of the Tamale stadium and will not be allowed inside the inner perimeter unless approval is granted.

Delegates will also be required to present QR-code-enabled tags issued to them, in addition to providing valid identification such as a voter ID, Ghana Card, or party membership card.

To avoid misconduct, delegates will not be permitted to carry mobile phones into voting booths. Furthermore, candidates are barred from transporting delegates to the voting centre or engaging in any form of campaigning on election grounds.

Each candidate is allowed to present four agents to monitor proceedings at the ballot boxes, but only one agent will sign the collated sheet. In addition, each candidate will be given access to the inner perimeter with two accredited representatives.

The heavy security presence, combined with the clearly laid out rules, underscores the NDC’s commitment to transparency, discipline, and calm as Tamale Central heads to the polls in a by-election necessitated by the death of its MP.
