The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged its members and supporters to exercise restraint and adhere to the law in the aftermath of the December 7 elections.
Speaking to the media following a meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and senior officers of the National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF), the party highlighted its commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring accountability.
The General Secretary of the NDC, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, provided an update on the discussions, which focused on recent disturbances and the party’s approach to addressing them.
He expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for what he described as an “unprecedented victory” in the elections, emphasizing that the win belongs to the people of Ghana and not just the NDC.
“We are under no illusion that this victory is solely for the NDC.
It is for the people of Ghana, and we must always keep that in mind,” he stated.
Mr. Kwetey acknowledged that tensions could arise after eight years of challenges but stressed the need for discipline and respect for the rule of law.
He confirmed that the NDC leadership had issued clear instructions to party members and supporters to moderate their actions and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
“We have reminded our rank and file that the security forces have the right to enforce the law and that all actions must be lawful,” he said.
The General Secretary also assured the public that measures would be taken to hold those who acted unlawfully accountable.
“Once the President-elect assumes office on January 7, we will ensure that institutions work effectively and that individuals who have violated the law face due consequences,” he added.
Mr. Kwetey urged NDC supporters to remain calm and wait for proper directives from party leadership, even in the face of provocation.
He stressed that the party’s focus is on building a unified Ghana, where the interests of all citizens take precedence over partisan considerations.
“This victory is not a mandate for division or arrogance.
It is a call to serve the people of Ghana and ensure that the country belongs to everyone, not just the NDC,” he emphasized.
He concluded by noting that the President-elect would soon address the nation to further emphasize the importance of peace, law, and order.
The NDC, he said, is determined to use its mandate to create a truly strong and great Ghana where every citizen feels included and respected.
