The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made a resolute commitment to ensuring a peaceful conduct of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at a gathering with the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs in Shai Osudoku on Monday, March 11, 2024, Mahama assured that his party is fully prepared to adhere to all regulations governing the electoral process.

“We are assuring you that the NDC is a peaceful party and that we will play by the rules, and we assure that if everything is transparent, free and fair, we are capable of winning the elections and so we’re not going to do anything that will disturb the elections,” he affirmed.

Mahama emphasized the crucial role of the chiefs in maintaining peace, urging them to intervene if any individuals attempt to disrupt the peace the nation seeks.

“We expect you as custodians of the land and respected traditional leaders to also be observers and make sure that if somebody is doing the wrong thing, you are able to speak up and correct them before they disturb the peace. It is the lack of justice that disturbs the peace. We want peace, but there must be justice,” he stressed.

Furthermore, Mahama called for the impartiality of both the electoral commission and security agencies.

“The electoral commission must be completely neutral and they must be impartial between all the parties, and they must do their work according to the mandate that they have been given. The security agencies should be neutral. Soldiers are not supposed to be in polling stations or be in collation centers and so they should stay. They can only come there when they are called by the police because law and order has broken down beyond the capacity of the police to handle. So we hope that all these rules will be followed so that we can have a peaceful election.”
