The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Ewurabena Aubynn has won in the parliamentary rerun of the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

She has claimed the seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a fierce contested race, marking the first time NDC has won the Ablekuma North since 1996.

The NDC candidate polled 34,090 votes while the NPP’s Akua Afriyie polled 33,881 votes.

The rerun followed a protracted dispute over the initial December 2024 parliamentary results, where violence at the collation centre halted the counting of results from 19 polling stations.

A High Court later ordered the EC to complete the process, but after months of delay and security concerns, the Commission opted to rerun the election in the affected areas.

The rerun election drew a significant turnout, with over 6,000 voters expected to cast their ballots.

The process was largely smooth across most centres, but isolated violence was recorded in parts of the constituency.

Tensions escalated at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, part of the Ablekuma North constituency.

The electoral rerun was violently disrupted when a group of unidentified “macho men” stormed the premises in coordinated fashion, arriving in a pickup truck accompanied by multiple motorbikes, forcing panic among voters, electoral personnel and security forces.

Eye‐witnesses report that the assailants overpowered the security detail and launched an assault on several political figures, including former MP and ex‐Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Disturbing video footage shows her being forced to the ground and reportedly stomped in the chest and groin area before officers intervened.

Other victims included NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female party agent, both reportedly injured amid the turmoil.

Later in the morning, a JoyNews journalist was slapped and pushed by a thug.

Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, was beaten by a group at the St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor.

Meanwhile, former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned the violent incidents reported during the ongoing parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.
