The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency.
This declaration follows the completion of vote collation and verification from the recent parliamentary elections.
Elikplim Akurugu achieved a historic victory in the constituency, securing 50,967 votes to narrowly defeat her closest rival, Mike Ocquaye Jnr of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 50,669 votes. The 298-vote margin highlights the competitive nature of the race and marks a significant shift in a constituency long considered an NPP stronghold.
This outcome represents the first time the NDC has won the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat. Political analysts are calling the victory a major milestone for the opposition party, signalling growing support in traditionally NPP-dominated areas.
In her acceptance speech, Akurugu expressed heartfelt gratitude to her constituents, stating, “I am deeply honoured by the trust you have placed in me. This victory belongs to all of us. Together, we will work tirelessly to bring development and progress to Dome-Kwabenya.” She also called for unity among residents, emphasizing the need to move forward collectively in addressing the constituency’s challenges.
The Electoral Commission’s announcement brings an official conclusion to the electoral process in the constituency. It also sets the stage for what promises to be a dynamic tenure for Akurugu, as she takes on her new role as a representative in Parliament.
