The National Democratic Congress candidate, James Gyakye Quayson has been declared the winner of the just-ended Assin North by-election in the central region.
James Gyakye Quayson was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2020 elections but saw the results nullified after the Supreme Court found the NDC candidate guilty of holding dual citizenship prior to filing to contest the 2020 polls.
The highest Court of the land subsequently ordered parliament to expunge Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records resulting in the Electoral Commission scheduling a by-election in Assin North.
Mr. Quayson who once again represented the opposition NDC faced competition from the New Patriotic Party’s candidate, Charles Opoku and the Liberal Party of Ghana’s candidate Bernice Enyonam Sefenu but came out as the winner
After the elections, James Gyakye Quayson secured a total of 17,245 votes representing 57.56% to retain the seat for the NDC whereas the NPP’s candidate secured 12,630 votes representing 42.15% of the total votes.
Although the election was perceived to be peaceful, a few violent incidents and election malpractices were recorded.
James Gyakye Quayson is expected to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament on Thursday, June 29, 2023, when parliament sits to debate the anti-gay bill.
